Demigods; the offspring of man and god. They have powers that place them higher than humans, that makes them greater predators and hunters. What need do they have to fear when they have such powers and the gods are on their sides?
But there is strength in numbers. There are thousands more humans than there are demigods. Even with their powers, demigods could not hope to win in a fight against the two forces. Hiding was their best option. They pretended to be the same as the humans around them to protect their identities and save themselves.
With the American's government collapse in 2012, demigods were discovered. They could no longer hide behing false facades, no longer say they were human. They were forced to come out into the open and hope for the best.
No one was sure whether or not these demigods could be trusted. They were feared because of their differences, avoided because of their powers.
To contain the threat they saw in the demigods, the US government shipped all the demigods to reservations around the country. But that wasn't enough. Putting them all in one place only increased the rist of an uprising. So they Maze Trials were implimented to keep control over them. Each year, a boy and a girl from each reservation is selected to be a part of the Trials. After a week's training, they are sent to a maze, where only the first ten to get to the exit survive. The rest are killed.
Other countries took different measures to keep themselves safe from the demigods. Some made peace with the demigods and now live in harmony with them. Others waged war with them, and either defeated them, or were defeated by them.
The Trials have been going on for 67 years. They are a normal part of life, even a source of entertainment for some. The ones that oppose them know better than to voice those concerns in earshot of the government officials. To do such is considered treason, in a way, and the punishment is severe. And so the trials continue, year by year.
